The Journeyman′s Workshop

Welcome to the Journeyman′s Workshop...

A journeyman of old, having completed his apprenticeship, was free to move from place to place to practice and improve his skills with the intention of becoming a master craftsman. I too have been traveling, via the internet though, to help improve my model engineering skills.

That′s me in the photo, John Waterhouse, would be model engineer. I live in Buckinghamshire in the UK. I have had an interest in things mechanical for as long as I can remember and have been online since the days of dial up modems, so I am not exactly new to engineering or the internet but I need a lot more practice at both.

Fortunately for the web wanderering engineer there is no shortage of workshops to visit. There must be hundreds, possibly thousands, of model engineering, engine building, model shipbuilding and general engineering websites. What′s more it′s all free! No matter the branch of engineering or model making I always find something of interest from new techniques to old plans.

My particular interests are stationary steam engines and model boats. Stirling and vacuum engines I find fascinating and workshop "improvements" a necessity. Having enjoyed visiting other engineers online I thought it only right to open my own workshop to visitors. Being interested in web design this afforded the ideal opportunity to learn the intricacies of CSS and find out how blogging works.

The Journeyman′s Workshop is based in a typical model engineers shed which I built many years ago. The workshop has seen many changes and at one time included both a darkroom and the garden store. The workshop has been online since 2007 originally as "CIGN Workshop" but I thought the new name might get a few more search engine hits. The original pages are reviews of my lathe and milling machine. There are now quite a few pages of modifications and additions to the workshop equipment, next on the agenda is to add some model engineering.

There is a workshop BLOG page up and running so feel free to comment and if you need them there are several info pages with drilling, tapping and machining data and tables. As mentioned earlier there is a vast wealth of information and help freely available online at the many excellent model engineering and woodturning websites.
